As part of the team, you will create original, timely, and compelling content for JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section. JAMA, an international peer-reviewed general medical journal published 48 times per year, is the world’s most widely circulated medical journal.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research and develop written content for JAMA’s Medical News & Perspectives section
• Closely follows new developments and current events in medical science and health policy
• Develops timely, informative, and compelling news and feature story ideas: conduct background research, cover medical conferences and briefings, and cultivate and interview source
• Creates news articles and feature stories covering clinical medicine and health policy
• Helps other writers develop story ideas and assists in planning the overall content of the JAMA Medical News & Perspectives section using general knowledge of medical science and of key experts in research, practice, and policy
• Uses JAMA’s content management system throughout content development process
Collaborate in the selection and development of graphics and multimedia to enrich online news content
• Suggests appropriate illustrations for articles, including photos, art, charts, and/or graphs
• Works with outside sources and JAMA’s editorial graphics department to obtain or develop appropriate images
• Suggests and contributes to podcasts and videos to enrich online news content
Participate in content quality assurance processes
• Works with physician reviewers, copy editors, production staff, and the graphics department to ensure accuracy, clarity, and style consistency for JAMA news content
May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or biological science is essential; advanced degree in either discipline is an asset
• 7+ years of newswriting experience, including 3 years of health care newswriting experience is required; familiarity with writing for physicians as well as health-savvy consumers is a plus
• Broad knowledge of medicine and biomedical science is necessary, with ability to search and synthesize information from public medical research databases such as PubMed
• Excellent scientific writing ability is a prerequisite; must be able to understand medical studies
• Experience working with digital and multimedia tools and ability to keep pace with emerging technologies; knowledge of Microsoft Word and familiarity with the Windows environment is necessary
• Ability to work well on multiple assignments from supervisors or on self-initiated projects under deadline pressure, with minimal supervision, is required
• Maturity, judgment, and personal presence to deal effectively with physicians, other scientists, and federal government officials is essential
• Interpersonal skills to cooperate with editor, staff, and other personnel at JAMA and the AMA a must
• Must have published news and feature articles and demonstrated reporting experience
• Up to 10% travel to medical conferences is required
