The Oregon Stater alumni magazine – in all forms, digital and print – keeps alumni and friends of Oregon State University informed about and involved in the ongoing story of the university and their fellow Beavers, to instill pride and encourage their support of the university through philanthropy, volunteerism or other means. Alumni of OSU are the primary audience, but faculty and other friends and supporters of the university receive the magazine as well. Like the Editor, the Associate Editor of the Oregon Stater is one of the OSU community’s most important storytellers.
The Associate Editor’s main responsibility is to assist and, when necessary, stand in for the Editor to produce the magazine in all of its forms, digital and print. The Associate Editor is a major creator of content for the magazine, and also writes speeches, assists colleagues with various other writing, editing and/or proofreading tasks, works with the Editor in supervising all contract workers, student interns and other contributors to the magazine, and performs other duties as specified.
The Associate Editor’s other key responsibility is to serve as an innovator and advocate for achieving the best possible flow of content to and from the Stater enterprise in various digital channels. This includes but is not be limited to social media, the main web presentation of the magazine, e-newsletters and/or other channels that may emerge. In essence, the Associate Editor must be vigilant for innovations that will help the Stater effectively share the OSU story, especially via digital channels. When appropriate, the Associate Editor helps implement these innovations in collaboration with the Editor, other members of the joint OSUAA/OSUF Advancement Communications team and other partners on and off campus.
The work location for this position is the CH2M Hill Alumni Center in Corvallis, Oregon. The position will require occasional overnight travel.
This position requires close collaboration with:
Creative services agencies and other contractors providing marketing support and content to the magazine and the OSUAA (writers, designers, photographers, videographers, etc.)
Central university marketing colleagues and publications managers from OSU colleges and other entities who generate content for the magazine and who, in the case of the colleges, contract with the Stater to print and deliver their college magazines
The joint Advancement Communications team (marketing, communications, events) of the OSU Alumni Association and the OSU Foundation, of which the Editor and Associate Editor are key members. This team has broad accountability and growing staff resources and expertise for communicating the messages of the Alumni Association and the Foundation. The Associate Editor works with the Editor to maintain a highly collaborative relationship between the Stater and the rest of the Advancement Communications team
Measures of Success
The Associate Editor will help transform the Oregon Stater from a strong print publication into a robust, best-practices showcase of innovation in the print and digital realms. Specifically, the success of the position holder will be measured by the degree to which they
Create content for many platforms that inspires and engages OSU friends and alumni
Help extend the magazine’s reach and make its content available in various digital channels
Increase OSU brand awareness among alumni, as measured by our bi-annual affinity survey
Help position the Oregon Stater as a leader among alumni publications, as measured by recognition through CASE and other professional groups
Produce content for the Oregon Stater and guide and edit the efforts of others who do so.
Develop comprehensive, multi-channel plans for key Stater content that advances the telling of the OSU story.
As one of the Advancement Communications team’s key storytellers, write content for a broad array of OSUF/OSUAA projects in addition to the Stater, and guide and edit the efforts of others who do so.
Working with the Editor, effectively lead production of the magazine, from maintaining the annual editorial calendar to story planning to writing, editing, proofreading, prepress work and other tasks as needed.
Serve as a key liaison with entities that might be appropriate partners in efforts to effectively engage OSU alumni and friends via digital means. An example might be eCampus alumni.
Work with other members of the Advancement Communications team to ensure that the Oregon Stater’s web site and social media presence maximize alumni engagement through storytelling.
Help ensure that the Oregon Stater continues to grow in its ability to include OSU people from all backgrounds in the ongoing telling of the Oregon State story, in print and digital channel.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge or understanding of:
Grammar, spelling, word usage and AP style, all at the expert level
Repurposing print content for digital use and using digital engagement strategies to strengthen the content of print publications
Software and other resources typically used by print and digital communicators (Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.)
The tools, terms, and principles of the design, printing and mailing processes – enough to effectively communicate with and assist in strategically guiding key partners and vendors
The tools, terms, and principles of digital communications platforms and technologies – enough to efficiently and effectively work with a wide range of colleagues, especially those who have deep expertise in these fields
Proven skill in:
Writing compelling copy that tells stories (from a sharp-witted tweet to a moving, long-form alumni profile) and editing and proofreading copy on deadline
Managing and collaborating with content creators such as writers, photographers, designers, etc
Strategic and creative thinking
Providing excellent service to a diverse and sometimes demanding audience with grace
Demonstrated ability to:
Handle interpersonal relationships maturely, thoughtfully and empathetically, including the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Work with printers, designers and others outside our organization whose work is critical to the success of the magazine
Work collaboratively across multiple organizations while advancing individual and team strategic goal
Meet deadlines and anticipate program needs
Stay current on emerging trends in print and digital communications
Provide excellent customer service with a warm, friendly demeanor
Work within given budget parameters
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
Stand, sit, talk, hear and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard
Sit at a computer for an extended period of time
Close vision requirements due to computer work
Light to moderate lifting may be required
Ability to uphold the stress of traveling by various modes of transportation occasionally requiring overnight and/or weekend stays
Regular, predictable attendance required; may require working on the weekends, after business operating hours or attending events
Moderate noise (i.e. work colleagues, business office with computers, phones, and printers)
Education and Experience Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field; advanced degree preferred. Five years of professional work experience in writing and editing on deadline for print and digital publication. Experience and educational equivalencies considered.
