Office of Communications

The University of California Hastings College of the Law was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and was the first law school in California. Over the years, it has built a legacy and reputation of being a preeminent institution comprised of renowned faculty committed to the study of legal theory and research, preparing students for careers in the judicial system, public service, and industry.

The College is redefining legal education through an experiential, interdisciplinary, and international approach to the law. By integrating rigorous academics with hands-on practice, the College is preparing its graduates to tackle the legal challenges – and leverage the opportunities – of the 21st century.


The Communications Office is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic communications and marketing program for UC Hastings Law.


The primary purpose of this position is to orchestrate the identification, development and dissemination of important news and information about the college to external audiences via strategic planning, media relations and hands-on editorial work.


Typical duties and responsibilities consist of, but are not limited to, the following:

Strategic Communications Planning and Management:
• Analyze the college’s communications needs and identify high-value opportunities aligned with the institutional strategic plan
• Collaborate closely with Communications Office team members to develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan
• Identify newsworthy activities and achievements across the college on a continual, proactive basis, conferring frequently with faculty and staff; recommend effective communications strategies and tactics for exploiting their potential
• Identify issues of consequence to the college on a continual, proactive basis by staying abreast of developments in legal higher education and the legal profession; recommend effective communications strategies and tactics for addressing them
• Integrate key college messages into communications planning and execution to ensure consistency and effectiveness
• Analyze success in achieving objectives and recommend adjustments for optimal performance

News/Information Gathering:
• Track a wide range of UC Hastings Law people, programs and initiatives to identify news and information of strategic importance
• Develop a system of information channels for surfacing different types of content from a variety of sources by capitalizing on existing tools and establishing new practices

Editorial Work:
• Write frequent news stories for use on the external website and share them via social media or other appropriate vehicles
• Manage the high-priority initiative to strengthen the college’s academic reputation nationwide; lead the Communications Office team in developing and implementing a multifaceted, year-round strategy
• Serve as principal liaison with an external publishing company to produce one magazine per year, guide content mix, identify stories, oversee design, direct distribution, and ensure high journalistic quality and strategic alignment

• Lead editorial projects as needed, define objectives and audiences, determine approach, assemble and direct creative/production teams, hire and oversee vendors, write and edit copy, estimate and track costs, coordinate distribution, and provide quality control for deliverables that may include print publications, email communications, videos, podcasts, presentations and event collateral
• Counsel colleagues across the college to develop effective communications projects or programs

Media Relations:
• Develop and manage a media relations program that advances the strategic goals of the college
• Serve as the Communications Office lead in developing a UC Hastings crisis communications plan that builds on the planning tools and resources available through UCSF; participate in UCSF-provided training for public information officers
• Create and maintain online resources for journalists, including a user-friendly faculty experts list
• Create and maintain media lists and cultivate relationships at key media outlets (print, radio, TV, web; locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally; mass media and trade press)
• Write press releases, media advisories and backgrounders; manage press conferences or press coverage of UC Hastings events, programs or initiatives
• Respond to media calls, providing timely and diplomatic responses to inquiries as they arise; refer journalists directly to faculty or staff experts to facilitate interaction; log inquiries and notify interested parties
• Advise the chancellor and dean and other faculty and staff leaders on media relations matters
• Act as spokesperson for the college when appropriate
• Issue results of faculty research on public-policy issues via multiple channels
• Counsel faculty members in the writing and placement of place op-eds
• Stay current on faculty expertise; college activities and priorities; issues facing law schools and the legal profession; and major issues facing California, the nation and the world
• Monitor media activity; analyze and report results; adjust strategies and tactics to improve effectiveness

• Collaborate with Communications Office team members and other colleagues to determine priorities and schedule/track the work; develop budget projections and manage purchasing activities; and define and implement efficient processes and practices


Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in journalism, communications or related field
• Minimum five years of relevant experience, including senior editorial and media relations roles
• Experience at a law school or in the legal arena strongly preferred

This full-time, exempt opportunity offers an annual salary range of $65,000 – $90,000 (commensurate with qualifications) plus an excellent benefits package. To apply:
