About the Job
The Capital, a 38,000 daily newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland is seeking an innovative Editor, the highest ranking newsroom leader, to support and advance the newspaper’s commitment to journalistic excellence, drive news strategy and quality across all platforms and work with members of the community to encourage and facilitate dialogue and connection. The Editor must be well experienced in both print and digital platforms, possess sharp hard news instincts, and be a strong leader and entrepreneur. The Editor leads a newsroom staff of approximately 56 employees, has additional editorial oversight for two free weeklies and a paid twice-weekly newspaper, serves on the Leadership Team and reports to the Publisher.
•With publisher, continuously set high standards for print/online content
•Define a clear and compelling news strategy for our portfolio of products, including the existing print newspapers, websites and mobile
•Meet with editors regularly to discuss news stories and issues affecting our coverage
•Work closely with editors in recruiting and hiring, staff development and overall news content origination
•Drive staff adaptation to new mediums, platforms, skill sets, story forms, and ways of doing things; lead by example
•Play an active role in leading the newspaper editorial board, writing editorials and an occasional column; respond to reader concerns, manage letters to the editor
•Take a proactive, hands-on approach in developing and leading reporting staff, including occasionally editing copy produced by writers and editors
•Share responsibility for growing print, digital and event audiences. Work with other department heads to create business plans. In collaboration with the Publisher, identify and address new business and audience opportunities.
•Embrace community and business outreach as an ambassador of The Capital and a leader in the Annapolis community
•Represent the newspaper at public appearance events
•Retain the best employees by setting clear expectations and assessing performance, providing timely feedback, coaching and recognition; follow established HR processes

•Effectiveness at managing change, solving problems, making decisions, resolving conflict and developing people.
•Enjoys the give-and-take of ideas with readers, handling their calls, emails, letters and complaints effectively; good listener who treats all contacts respectfully & professionally
•Works collaboratively as a member of the company leadership team as we develop product lines to meet the needs of changing markets
•Bachelor’s degree required
•Ten years of newsroom journalism experience, including five years of supervisory/leadership and a minimum of three years news editing experience
•Working knowledge/experience with print and online content integration
