Manship School of Mass Communications
Louisiana State University
The Manship School of Mass Communication and the Office of Student Media at Louisiana State University invite applications for a professional-in-residence to join our faculty and advise the production of editorial content for The Daily Reveille newspaper and other student media products. Because this entails advising students who produce content for year-round publications, this is a 12-month position.
The Office of Student Media provides news, information and entertainment that engages LSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and others interested in the LSU community and provides student employees with practical experience managing and producing content for media platforms. We are committed to the highest standards of student journalism.
This position combines advising student journalists in the Office of Student Media with classroom teaching at the Manship School of Mass Communication. The content adviser must guide students in the production of high-quality, ambitious content (reporting, writing, editing, design, photography, video and interactive storytelling) as well as audience engagement via social media and audience analytics. The adviser will be responsible for assessing the performance of these student journalists by providing regular critiques of their work. The content adviser will teach journalism courses in the Manship School in the areas of the adviser’s particular expertise, including the school’s experiential journalism curriculum. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach data journalism, data visualization and/or computer-assisted reporting.
The content adviser must be passionate about preserving the role of journalism in democracy and providing the next generation of journalists with the knowledge and skills to practice successfully in an environment of rapidly changing technology. The position requires someone who has a deep understanding of digital media and understands its role in building and satisfying a university-based audience. 90%
